On Saturday  March 18th, Christian Haupt and Christian Ramos were Platt’s first entrants as well as finalist and award recipients recognized at the Connecticut Science Fair held at Quinnipiac University.  Both students received $100 each from the University of New Haven High School Awards in Engineering and Science in the Special Categories Award for Sustainability. They also placed 3rd Honors for the QU Science Fair overall also in the Sustainability category.

Only 25% of students entering a project to the Connecticut Science Fair make it to the finalist category. Additionally, their project was flagged and invited to be entered into the New England Water Environmental Association (NEWEA) Connecticut Science State Stockholm Junior Water Prize competition. The state winner of this competition goes onto the next round in Charlotte N.C and finally onto Stockholm Sweden.

The focus of their Project -W Water Reuse System was the national and world wide concern with water scarcity. They did extensive research on the current systems that have been developed to recycle/reuse “grey water” and began to address how they would improve them.

Chris and Chris, along with the assistance of Mr. Salemme and CTHSS’s participation with the Green STEP/Eversource programs were able to use their skills and knowledge of their trade combined with their knowledge and experience of the scientific method to bring their ideas to fruition. The boys are hoping to participate next year and be spokespeople to next year’s 10th grade construction cluster students to encourage many more of our students to participate.
